Portland and the causeway connecting Portland to Weymouth is one of nature’s strangest phenomenon’s and is a key feature of the Jurassic Coast.
Chesil Beach is the strip of beach with connects Portland to the mainland and is of scientific importance as it is one of the world’s only natural tombolos which makes Portland a ‘connected island’.
This small strip of beach and causeway also contains the fleet where nature enthusiasts flock to see an amazing array of wildlife both on the land and in the water.
The island of Portland itself is made of limestone which has been mined over the years and is one of the many things which Portland is famous for.
